New Work Reporting Requirements

Adults will need to show that they are working or doing another approved activity to get or keep Medicaid. This is called “work reporting requirements” or “community engagement requirements.”

You can meet this requirement in different ways.

• Your household earns at least $580 in a month, OR
• You complete at least 80 hours of approved activities in a month (work, volunteering, job training, school, or a combination), OR
• You are in school at least half-time

You only need to show that you met 1 of these requirements for 1 month since your previous renewal.

These changes do not affect everyone with Medicaid. They only affect people in the MO HealthNet for Expansion Adults (Adult Expansion Group). This is Missouri Medicaid’s program for adults ages 19-64 whose household income is under the limit.

Many People Are Exempt

Some adults are exempt from (are not affected by) the new work reporting requirements. You do not need to report work or other approved activities if you:

• Are a parent or caregiver of a child under 14 years old

• Are a parent or caregiver of someone with a disability
• Are pregnant or have postpartum coverage from Medicaid
• Are American Indian or Alaska Native
• Are a veteran with a service-connected disability rated as total
• Were in foster care at age 18 and are currently under 26

• Are getting help for a substance use disorder, such as a treatment or rehabilitation program, and you cannot work (unless you have been in stable recovery for 5 or more years)
• Are living with a substance use disorder that keeps you from working
• Have a serious health condition that prevents you from working
• Are blind or have a disability and you cannot work
• Are currently or were recently incarcerated (in past 3 months)
• Get SNAP (food assistance) and are subject to SNAP work requirements
• Already meet TANF (cash assistance) work requirements

Renewals Will Happen Every 6 Months

Your Medicaid renewal will now happen every 6 months instead of once a year.

What to expect:

• You’ll get a notice in the mail from Missouri Department of Social Services (DSS) telling you it’s time to renew
• You should respond as soon as possible to keep your coverage
• At each renewal, you may need to show that you met the work requirements since your previous renewal

Missing a renewal could mean losing your coverage. Make sure DSS has your current address, phone number, and email address.

What You Can Do Now

The changes to Medicaid are happening in 2027. But it’s never too early to prepare.

1. Update your contact information. Make sure DSS has your current contact information.
   • To update your contact information, go to dss.mo.gov/fsd and click “Report a Change”.
2. Keep your documents. Save anything that shows your work, school, volunteering, job training, or other approved activities, such as:
   • Pay stubs
   • School enrollment letters
   • Job training program letters
   • Signed volunteer hour sheets

The state may need to see these documents next year to confirm that you meet work reporting requirements.
